Coming this summer: Schmigadoon!
Posted by: MockingbirdGirl 03:40 pm EST 02/19/21

Cecily Strong and Keegan-Michael Key are stunned by the sound of music in the first photo from Schmigadoon!, an upcoming Apple TV+ musical comedy executive-produced by Saturday Night Live boss Lorne Michaels. Strong (SNL) and Key (Friends From College) star as “a couple on a backpacking trip designed to reinvigorate their relationship when they discover a magical town in which everyone acts as if they’re in a musical from the 1940s,” per the official synopsis. “They then discover that they can’t leave until they find ‘true love.'”

As a parody of iconic musicals, the series has assembled a cast stacked with talent from TV and theater, including Tony winners Alan Cumming (The Good Wife, Cabaret), Kristin Chenoweth (Wicked, Pushing Daisies) and Jane Krakowski (30 Rock, Nine). Rounding out the ensemble are Aaron Tveit (Graceland, Grease: Live), Dove Cameron (Descendants, Hairspray Live!), Tony nominee Ariana DeBose (Hamilton), Fred Armisen (SNL), Jaime Camil (Jane the Virgin) and Ann Harada (Avenue Q)...

Hopefully the people they find in that town sing in the true 1940's musical style. Otherwise, it would be glaring.

Save the date - because it could be that they only broadcast this show once every 100 years...

Any fans of MGM's 1954 screen version starring Gene Kelly and Cyd Charisse? I've caught bits of it, but I guess I need to see the complete film.

I was so bummed to read that the movie cuts two of my favorite Lerner & Loewe songs ever: the glorious ''Come to Me, Bend to Me'' and ''There But for You Go I.'' Also dropped: ''From This Day On'' and Meg's hilarious ''The Love of My Life'' (considered too risque for general audiences back then).

I had hoped Broadway would revive ''Brigadoon'' with Patrick Wilson & Kelli O'Hara, but that's like waitin' for a mythic Scottish town to reappear.

I watched part of it last night, Wayman, and was amused that I am such a conditioned creature (and/or just an old romantic softie under the crusty old broad shell), than when Mr. Lundie came out on that stupid phony bridge and said, “Tommy, Tommy, lad! Ye woke me up!”—-I still got goosebumps!

And I’ve seen the film a zillion times, as it was one of my mom’s favorites. It’s flawed, but has some moments. As you say, some of the best songs are cut and Meg loses much without her naughty numbers. Van Johnson is a delight, and Cyd and Gene dance all over that crummy soundstage. Kelly had scouted locations in Scotland, and had hopes of huge numbers of clans coming over the hills, like a John Ford western, but Mayer said no way. I also imagine the erratic weather would have added to the cost. So, they built a village on a soundstage, even adding deer and pheasants for the chase scene.

I do wonder what it would have been like (and if more of the score had been kept) if it had been done with Howard Keel and Jane Powell.

I was discussing the film today on my Facebook page,,and one of my friends in the science fiction community said she had long yearned to write a Star Trek-Brigadoon crossover, in which Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott visits the Highlands and stumbles on the village, making its once every hundred years appearance in the 23rd century! I thought this was utterly brilliant, but you all know I’m a nerd!

The DVD includes 3 cut numbers, "Come to Me, Bend to Me" (glorious vocal but no dance music), "Sword Dance" (spectacular), and "From This Day On" (they slowed the tempo so Kelly could sing it, unfortunately it's not very good, but Kelly and Charisse's dance is beautiful). There's an audio outtake of Kelly singing "There But for You Go I" (again the tempo is slowed, Kelly's singing is OK, but undoubtedly not good enough for a major film musical.

I agree with you. The film has flaws, but there's enough good stuff in it to make it worthwhile watching. There is a '66 TV version which is well sung by Robert Goulet and Sally Ann Howes. It features more of the score but not "The Love of My Life", which was still considered too risque for family audiences.

I found the 1966 TV version on YouTube, and you're right: It's well-sung. Robert Goulet especially sounds so rich and resonant. What a voice!

But this adaptation is truncated, too; it runs only an hour and 20 minutes. Also in the cast: Peter Falk as Jeff and Edward Villella as Charlie.

The filming of ''Come to Me'' is odd, focusing much more on Jean (Linda Howe) than Charlie (Thomas Carlisle, who sings so gloriously).

Armstrong Flooring sponsored the broadcast, so it also offered a cast recording of ''Brigadoon'' at Armstrong dealers for just $1!

I saw both versions on TV, most likely in the 60's. I can't recall if the '54 version was shown before the '66 TV version. In '61 NBC debuted Saturday Night at the Movies but Brigadoon is not listed in its 1st 3 seasons. Eventually the other networks showed a similar well known film from the late 40's through the 60's that had previously not been shown on TV on Sunday through Friday nights in prime time.

In Chicago there was an anthology series originally titled The Best of MGM but was eventually changed to The Best of CBS -- this series showed films (previously not seen on TV from the 30's through the early 50's) on Saturday night at 10:30 PM. I can't find any info on this series. It may have debuted in the very late 50's -- I believe it continued to run (in Chicago) for several years after Saturday Night at the Movies debuted. For many years The Best of CBS was followed by Irv Kupcinet's At Random which came on in the middle of the night after the 10:30 PM movie.

The Armstrong Circle Theatre, as I believe it was called, also presented Kiss Me, Kate, starring Goulet and Carol Lawrence. Bill and Lois were played by Michael Callan and (of all people) Jessica Walter. Marty Ingels and Jules Munshin delivered "Brush Up Your Shakespeare." For some reason -- did my parents redo the kitchen floor? --- we had that cast album, which I wore out. Again, the leads were in great voice, but there were oddities, including a sort-of rock arrangement of "Always True to Your in My Fashion." Still, it was my gateway to Cole Porter.
