I watched part of it last night, Wayman, and was amused that I am such a conditioned creature (and/or just an old romantic softie under the crusty old broad shell), than when Mr. Lundie came out on that stupid phony bridge and said, “Tommy, Tommy, lad! Ye woke me up!”—-I still got goosebumps!

And I’ve seen the film a zillion times, as it was one of my mom’s favorites. It’s flawed, but has some moments. As you say, some of the best songs are cut and Meg loses much without her naughty numbers. Van Johnson is a delight, and Cyd and Gene dance all over that crummy soundstage. Kelly had scouted locations in Scotland, and had hopes of huge numbers of clans coming over the hills, like a John Ford western, but Mayer said no way. I also imagine the erratic weather would have added to the cost. So, they built a village on a soundstage, even adding deer and pheasants for the chase scene.

I do wonder what it would have been like (and if more of the score had been kept) if it had been done with Howard Keel and Jane Powell.

I was discussing the film today on my Facebook page,,and one of my friends in the science fiction community said she had long yearned to write a Star Trek-Brigadoon crossover, in which Chief Engineer Montgomery Scott visits the Highlands and stumbles on the village, making its once every hundred years appearance in the 23rd century! I thought this was utterly brilliant, but you all know I’m a nerd!
