| I found the 1966 TV version on YouTube, and you're right: It's well-sung. Robert Goulet especially sounds so rich and resonant. What a voice! But this adaptation is truncated, too; it runs only an hour and 20 minutes. Also in the cast: Peter Falk as Jeff and Edward Villella as Charlie. The filming of ''Come to Me'' is odd, focusing much more on Jean (Linda Howe) than Charlie (Thomas Carlisle, who sings so gloriously). Armstrong Flooring sponsored the broadcast, so it also offered a cast recording of ''Brigadoon'' at Armstrong dealers for just $1! |

| I saw both versions on TV, most likely in the 60's. I can't recall if the '54 version was shown before the '66 TV version. In '61 NBC debuted Saturday Night at the Movies but Brigadoon is not listed in its 1st 3 seasons. Eventually the other networks showed a similar well known film from the late 40's through the 60's that had previously not been shown on TV on Sunday through Friday nights in prime time. In Chicago there was an anthology series originally titled The Best of MGM but was eventually changed to The Best of CBS -- this series showed films (previously not seen on TV from the 30's through the early 50's) on Saturday night at 10:30 PM. I can't find any info on this series. It may have debuted in the very late 50's -- I believe it continued to run (in Chicago) for several years after Saturday Night at the Movies debuted. For many years The Best of CBS was followed by Irv Kupcinet's At Random which came on in the middle of the night after the 10:30 PM movie. |

| The Armstrong Circle Theatre, as I believe it was called, also presented Kiss Me, Kate, starring Goulet and Carol Lawrence. Bill and Lois were played by Michael Callan and (of all people) Jessica Walter. Marty Ingels and Jules Munshin delivered "Brush Up Your Shakespeare." For some reason -- did my parents redo the kitchen floor? --- we had that cast album, which I wore out. Again, the leads were in great voice, but there were oddities, including a sort-of rock arrangement of "Always True to Your in My Fashion." Still, it was my gateway to Cole Porter. | |
