| I was so excited to read this article, after just having re-discovered the OBC and borrowed the libretto from a local library. Four paragraphs in, I had to stop reading. Green is a negative snarky hack. He says the OBC is a post-mortem -- which is hardly the case. The singing is rough -- but there is SO much energy, life, and joy on that recording. He uses extremely negative and derisive language, calls the musical a bomb -- notes all it's mistakes, etc. Green has admitted in his articles for the Times (see his piece about Hal Prince) that he is a failed creative, and left the profession because he didn't have the talent or perseverance. He treats his views an orthodox opinion -- always with snark, condescension, and an "I know better than you" or sometimes "I know better than the practitioners" tone. There's nothing wrong with being a failed artist. Their is something wrong with making readers of the NYTimes suffer the crappy and poorly supported opinions of a bruised ego who failed at what he wanted to do, so now pontificates his views to us as gospel, intelligence, and insight. |
