My niece is very excited by "On Pointe" the Disney + documentary series. So excited that I didn't have the heart to tell her that not only are ballet schools looking for a particular type of physical specimen when they make their selections but the School of American Ballet may or may not be also selecting for the Balanchine ideal at an early age. And that used to the ability to grow long straight hair for ballets like "Serenade".

I saw the first episode and the show did make it clear that the school was looking for particular physical features which was excellent but then the show goes out of its way to show that they hold auditions in Harlem to what looked like a largely white group of applicants. It's what a friend calls "TV honest". It seemed like the documentary is avoiding the long history of discriminatory aesthetics, both physical and skin color, of the House of Balanchine. It might be better to go into that history to show girls and their mothers how specific the kind of dancer NYCB was and perhaps still is looking for.
