| I believe the concept of selling tickets based on specific performance times is the union agreement for handling digital performance. The theater can’t sell more access than they would have been able to sell tickets to seats in the physical space for the length of the “run,” which in this case is the length of availability for a single pre-filmed program. Typically you’re allowed to pause, rewind, or rewatch as much as you want for a 72 hour window, though I’m not sure if that window would start as soon as your purchase toes through or if the link would be held for you until the performance date through TDF. This revue is essentially a concert that runs a little under two hours in two acts. It doesn’t have the narrative conceit of a Putting It Together, nor does it have the interview/commentary component like Sondheim on Sondheim (though it does directly use one mash up arrangement from that show) You can tell that the revue as originally imagined is for a specific sized ensemble cast, so there’s a certain thematic logic to which performer tracks are assigned which solos...but this filmed version adds additional performers (Norm Lewis, Emily Skinner, Solea Pfeiffer, and Conrad Ricamora) who are essentially guest stars with two solos apiece (that have been redistributed from the rest of the D.C. cast) who do not appear in any of the group numbers. This makes the program play much more like a concert. It’s very well filmed, an elegant presentation of empty stages and formal wear, and the orchestration for 16 pieces feels appropriately substantial. If you’re VERY familiar with the Sondheim revue oeuvre...this doesn’t reinvent the wheel and doesn’t have many surprises. But it’s a very professional effort and I was happy to have SOMETHING to watch, haha. And it’s lovely to give some wider visibility to the D.C. area performers. |
