Clearly that is Green's opinion (that Whistle was and will always remain a bomb) and it may be yours. I tip my hat toward both of you for the right to hold that opinion. As for me, and I expressed this in my review of the Jay Recording on Amazon, that now that I have heard the full score I have a much clearer idea of what was in the creative team's heads. I think they were aiming for a theater of the absurd musical. They almost got there, but the absurdity of it all seems to come in and out of focus. If I am correct and that is what was on Sondheim and Laurent's minds, then it is possible that with some tweaking then can fix the warts. With that said, I am not sure that Broadway then or even Broadway now is going to embrace the show, theater of the absurd is not exactly frequently revived. I saw a marvelous production of Rhinocerous at Asolo Rep a few years ago, directed by Frank Galati (Ragtime) and while about half the audience found it screamingly funny (me included), the other half remained totally unconvinced. How many productions of The Balcony, The Maids, The Rehearsal, and other titles from the genre have you seen? I cut my teeth on this repertory when still a teen at The Charles Playhouse in Boston, hence it got into and stayed in my bones, but by and large for others, not so much. So, I lay claim before you that Anyone Can Whistle is not a bomb, but a musical that almost gets to where the creators were aiming and even then, it is not likely to attract audiences.

It ran only 9 performances. It lost almost all its investment.

I cannot see how it is an opinion that the show was a bomb. It bombed.

Even people like Green who admire the work cannot change that.

And even you do not offer anything to counter Green and others assertion of the play's flop status. It may be one of the best shows ever to bomb, but it did indeed bomb.
