Memory can be a funny thing, and as much as we hold on to very certain recollections of the past, they aren't always reliable. For example, when I read your clear memory of getting an email from Lincoln Center about their "Godot", I'm struck by the thought that Lincoln Center must have been very ahead of the curve to be contacting their members by email in 1988, a time when I don't think very many people were using email, and when ticket sales were still largely done by box office and telephone. (Were people still doing mail-in money orders in 1988?)
I was still a kid in the 80s, so I wasn't around New York to know how widespread e-mail was back then, but I do wonder if it's possible that you've perhaps subconsciously embellished that memory. We all do it, after all. (I once had my mother describe something to me that I had told her about as it if had happened to her.) |
