The title "theatre of the absurd" derives from an essay called the Myth of Sisyphus by Albert Camus, and refers to a universe where there is no god, no afterlife and no fixed spiritual order. Beckett, Ionesco and Genet write in this mode. It doesn't refer to theatre that is just mocking or ridiculous. Anyone Can Whistle definitely has its charms, but to me it is more of a smartass, mocking collegiate-type piece, attempting to be satirical but too arch for its own good. I believe that assessment accords with Sondheim's own view. You could certainly produce it today, but I doubt it would ever find any kind of commercial success.
