The show's have your cake and ridicule it too with the Indian characters is hard to take.
It clearly wasn't in 1946, or 1966, or even in the late 70's when I was in a youth production of the '66 version.
Nowadays, however - yes. I'm not a fan of the 1999 Peter Stone rewrite in of itself, but otherwise, I think this show isn't easily done anymore. The (original) opening number already sets up the Indians as savages. (Though I think the Stone version made a very lazy and way-too-obvious choice by moving "No Business Like Show Business" to the top of the show - I hate that.) |
