| I'm not inventing your motives. The post you responded to was written by Chazwaza, who wrote in part, "Which isn't to say that unfair sexist pay inequality doesn't happen plenty and happen with female actors with big names, of course it does and it should not. (the Williams/Wahlberg situation is absolutely insane, even considering that he is a much bigger global draw than she is... the disparity is still mind-boggling)." You were the one who resorted to a "personal attack" by unfairly labeling Chazwaza as "irresponsible" for "completely removing gender from the conversation," when s/he did nothing of the kind. In my opinion, It was very wrong of you -- one might even say "irresponsible" -- to use that insult towards someone who did not actually do what you think they did. A straw man argument happens when someone can't effectively argue a point, so they argue a related point instead and hope that no one will notice the difference. In this case, the big difference was between a discussion of specific examples of what certain actors were paid for certain projects on the one hand and an overall, general system of pay inequality on the other. The fact that Sienna Miller was offered less money for BLACKBIRD than Jeff Daniels (if that was in fact the show she was referring to) does not necessarily mean that the disparity IN THAT PARTICULAR CASE was due to gender -- and, of course, neither does the fact that I'm sure Meryl Streep a far higher salary for many of her movies than did her male co-stars. In any event, neither of these specific examples should be extrapolated as proof of anything. But as Chazwaza clearly wrote (even though you somehow seem to have missed it), "of course" such pay inequality happens "plenty,", and it "should not." |
