It's interesting to consider if author's are responsible for an audiences 'misinterpretation'. One example that comes to mind is "If You Could See her". It seems to me that Kander and Ebb's intentions here are so clear that to claim it is anti-semitic is a wilful misreading. Another example I can think of though, come from Team America. I vividly remember being on a college campus some years back and a right wing group loudly blaring "Everyone has AIDS", and using the song to mock and taunt a queer group. Clearly those 'in the know' are aware of what Parker and Stone are doing with that song, but should authors be mindful of how their material can be easily misused and weaponised? I guess, more broadly, do authors have a responsibility over the myriad ways their work could be used? Or does their responsibility end when the work goes out into the world?
