| Authors cannot bear responsibility for the ways their work is used once it's out into the ether. Just in the last year, "Do You Hear the People Sing" has been used as a rallying anthem among protestors in Myanmar -- after being used by Hong Kong democracy protestors a few years ago. Boublil and Schönberg have nothing to do with this, naturally. More disturbingly, the American white supremacist organization the Proud Boys has a founder who said the name of his group was inspired by the song "Proud of Your Boy," cut from the film version of Disney's "Aladdin" but reinstated for the stage production: "We’re called Proud Boys because I went to one of my kids’ music recitals and some ponce got up there and while everyone’s playing the piano and the violin and doing stuff they tried, he gets up and he goes, “Proud of your boy, I’ll make you proud of your boy.” It’s some song from “Aladdin.” And I was looking around for the dad because I thought there’s no way this dad is proud of his boy, and of course, he was the child of a single mom…duh! His mother told him, yes sing a song, that’s a talent, and there was no dad to say no you’re not, play the piano for christ’s sakes." Disturbing, to put it mildly. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken's original song couldn't have a meaning much further from what these racists believe. But other than having their lawyers asking not to have their song played at public events, etc, I really don't think there's much they can do. - GMB |
