A dear friend and a brilliant actress- graduate of RADA and much celebrated- was notorious for her alarming rewrites. Playing Helen Potts in Picnic instead of saying to Hal: "I bet you've never had cherry pie for breakfast before!" (to which Inge had him answering "No, ma'am, I haven't"), one day she said "I bet you've never had pie before!" to which Hal felt compelled to respond, "Uhhh, no, ma'am, I haven't",
The audience was left to contemplate Hal's sad, pieless upbringing.
