The re-issued OBC has the demo of Sondheim singing an earlier version of this song -- similar lyrics, but totally different music.
Has Sondheim ever discussed why he changed the song and at who's urging? His own? Did he not feel it was right for the moment. The final one is so lush and gorgeous -- but I think the earlier version has its own appeal as well...
