| It will be interesting to see if Slave Play or The Inheritance will win Best Play. I enjoyed both, although I thought both were definitely flawed. As time goes on, though, the flaws in The Inheritance have faded more, and I have fonder memories of it than of Slave Play. I think it's partially because Slave Play, to me, is an intellectual construct while The Inheritance touches the heart. I also think the flaws in Slave Play relate directly to the execution of its central message -- I remember the conversation here about how muddled the playwriting is. The play should have gone through one more re-write IMO. I don't know if it's a script that should be considered the Best Play. It is very well-directed, which covers some of the flaws. My personal vote would be The Inheritance wins Best Play and Robert O'Hara wins Best Director for Slave Play. I think there is a good chance Joaquina Kalukango will win Best Actress for Slave Play, particularly since Mary-Louise Parker is returning next year in How I Learned to Drive. None of the other acting nominees from Slave Play have a realistic chance of winning. |
