I agree. I think the audience makes a difference.
The time makes a difference too. BOOK OF MORMON premiered in 2011. I just watched a YouTube video from that year of Obama mocking Trump to his face at the White House correspondents dinner. It seems like a different era entirely now.
I think all these discussions need to be looked at individually. Most of the time they are about adjustments to time and place and that seems straightforward enough but sometimes they are about changes that actually obscure or bury historical meaning which the rights holders don't want to open up as a can of worms. I think the current removal of Dr. Seuss books is about the latter. The rights holders don't want to get into Dr. Seuss' wartime propaganda drawings which are both anti-fascist and deeply racist. |
