I liked The Inheritance, but for all its length it seemed a facile meeting of Howard's End and the effect of AIDS on gay culture, neither of which seem to call for facile treatment. Perhaps that's what Lopez was going for, to bring the expository elements of the novel and the after-effects of such tragedy to a more down-to-earth experience?
Both worthy pieces, to be sure, but I preferred Slave Play. It's a far more original work and Harris trusted his audience to discover along with his characters, relying less than Lopez on already-proven dramatic triggers. Also, shallow though this may sound, I appreciated its brevity. |
