| Gene Nelson was very under-rated in his films, actually was more athletic then Gene Kelly (watch his gymnastic routine below), and played opposite Doris Day in a few films at Warner Brothers and also Will Parker from "Oklahoma!" film. But he probably had a lot more impact on screen than some of his co-stars, maybe that's why the bigger salary. Dorothy Collins was known mostly from the tv show "Your Hit Parade". Alexis Smith was a contract player at Warner Brothers who was known for being lovely, but usually overshadowed by her co-stars. Bette Davis, top prima donna at Warners, said that she was rather astonished by how good Smith was in "Follies" in that Alexis had never shown that star wattage in her films. McMartin, as above poster noted, probably was best known for "Sweet Charity". Yvonne DeCarlo had played opposite folks like Clark Gable and Charlton Heston on screen, and while she was good, she never really achieved top star status in movies, and had more recently gone from sloe-eye vamp, to both mother and camp on tv in "The Munsters". Angela Lansbury would have seem under-used had she played Phyllis or Sally, after having been on-stage the majority of the show in "Mame" and likewise as the star of "Dear World". The 2 female leads in "Follies" aren't on stage as much as someone who recently won Broadway superstardom would be expected to be. |
