| Not only could he dance incredibly, he had a better singing voice than Gene Kelly, was very likeable as an actor (and very good in a dramatic film noir recently seen on TCM), but he also started out as an ice skater with Sonja Henie! He really started to come into his own on film around the late 40s - early 50s into the mid-50s, but by the time of "Oklahoma!", the studio system was collapsing and movie musicals were made mostly of the big Broadway names and not as regularly as before. Nelson veered into a successful directing career when not doing stage work, even writing an Elvis Presley movie. Plus his work in "Follies" is pretty incredible with athletic leaps in his solos years after his movie career! Check out his work tapping with Doris Day in some of their films together; they are both great. | |
