... Wiser minds might have prevailed in thinking, once that Oprah Winfrey interview was scheduled, that this might not be the ideal time to drop a candy-colored musical about the royal family of England, however critically it might (or might not, I have no idea) look at them.

And now that the Meghan and Harry interview proved to be such an event, scoring blockbuster ratings and sending the establishment over there into a tizzy of damage control, I have to imagine this property has become something of a hot potato. I’m sure it’s very sympathetic to Diana, obviously, and maybe people will appreciate it more than even a month ago, due to certain parallels between her and Meghan. At the same time, if they schedule it right away it’ll look like a cynical response to the interview, and be judged as such, regardless of the show’s quality.

My suspicion is that they wait a month or two and shift the show’s streaming premiere into the summer, after the current semi-scandal has died down, closer to when the Broadway show itself might (or might not) reopen, and in any case, closer to when the next season of The Crown would likely premiere at the end of the year.

I don’t disagree with anything you wrote, but regardless of the show’s content, and given the current attention to the subject, seems like they would attract a lot of viewers if they dropped it soon

I don't think the next season of The Crown won't happen until Fall of 2022.

I also have no idea the content of this musical actually, but it would be hard to believe a musical about Princess Diana titled Diana would be "candy-colored" let alone about the Royal family, especially Charles and his parents. If it is, man what a massively tone-deaf take on Diana and her story, now or last year or any year.

....there IS a whole song about Diana wearing a "fuck me dress" to a press event to exact revenge on an adulterous Charles. And those are not my words btw-- it's essentially the song's chorus.

Anyway I don't know if that's considered "candy-colored" or "smut-colored" but that is a very real number from the show.

I completely picked that adjective out of thin air, with no knowledge whatsoever of the musical's content, so just for laughs I did a search for "Princess" "Diana" "candy-colored" and for what it's worth one of the first things that comes up is a review from Novemeber of The Crown, season 4, which among other things praises the TV show for "reveling in the candy-colored tale of Charles and Di".

As far as the actual musical itself, though, I looked up its out-of-town reviews for the first time since they were printed, and these passages from Charles McNulty's LA Times review – which happened to be published exactly 2 years ago this week – jumped out at me:
"... The show, which is receiving its world premiere at the La Jolla Playhouse, has a generic quality that for all its efficient smoothness seems culturally misplaced.... Whatever cleverness exists in DiPietro’s book is regularly undermined by splashy musical numbers that seem completely foreign to the story... “Diana,” built around superficial musical comedy triggers, is designed for Anglophiles who don’t want to get on a plane.... “Diana” turns a complicated life into light entertainment. In today’s degraded theatrical marketplace, the show should give fish and chips a run for its money."

That's just one person's opinion, but I definitely got the sense from others who've seen it that "Evita" it ain't (let alone "The Crown"). I'm sure the show at least tries to tackle some of the tragic elements in Diana's story, particularly with regard to the paparazzi (how could it not, given how it ends) – but I have to wonder if it'll all feel a bit quaint after the first-ever, and current, Duchess of Sussex came right out and accused the royal family of racism. I do think the timing's not ideal – it would seem to lower the stakes for the show, which in turn raises the stakes for the producers of the musical – but maybe I'm wrong. I look forward to seeing it on TV.

My TB Regional review of the world premiere production in La Jolla was also a pan (linked below). I understand that the creatives did considerable work on the first act in particular, though they are using the same principals as in La Jolla going forward. I do not have any inside information about the state of the film version, but I’m willing to withhold judgment until I see it.

how sad that they went that way with it. Thanks for digging. I had heard it was very mediocre but still surprised. Also surprised it wasn't released on Netflix sooner (but also surprised Netflix wanted it at all given that their other Di content is harder-hitting).
