| It's to the point, but your central arguments contradict themselves: "I don't think that all of these shows will reopen. Some will take the money and run, and for others it will be a question of whether they can hold on to the theatre long enough." va. "I think we will be lucky if spring-summer 2023 is getting back to relatively full steam." If shows can't hold on to their theatres long enough, it's because the Shuberts, Nederlanders and Jujamcyn have other properties knocking on the door to get in, with their money all ready - I don't see that happening, certainly not so soon, and certainly not if the money for the pre-existing ones is already there (and only reinforced by the insurance payoffs). But either way, if shows that were in place a year ago are getting kicked out for others, then that would mean the theaters are in fact getting back to relatively full steam, and sooner than even I predicted, let alone mid-2023. And as far as 'some will take the money and run', obviously each insurance policy is different, but for many I would guess the size of the payoff depended on whether the producers were guaranteeing best efforts to re-open (as opposed to just an insurance settlement for purposes of a write-off). Maybe you're right and one or three more shows will fall by the wayside... but I doubt the producers of things like Six, Company, The Minutes, and many others would still bother giving interviews and hyping their shows a year after they shut down if they didn't plan on coming back (if one was being cynical, in the case of Broadway's Best Shows/Spotlight on Plays, one could argue that the entire year+ of online play readings, in addition to raising money for the Actors Fund, was so that Jeffrey Richards could build up an even bigger mailing list to promote The Minutes, American Buffalo and Glengarry Glen Ross if they happen, and his other shows once Broadway was back up and running.) |
