One of the most recent times I worked as an actor I had a director tell me, in front of a room full of people and with a sense of humor, that the way I was playing the character was schizophrenic. I laughed, the room laughed, and certainly no one took it seriously. (And he wasn’t wrong- obviously not in a literally sense, but in a metaphorical one... adjustments were made accordingly.) No one I knew was offended, and (as far as I know) that included two people in the cast who suffered from depression and one who had more serious mental illness in their family. That was just a few years ago so while I realize times are changing, I do sometimes wonder if the world is losing its sense of humor and/or perspective, not specifically with regard to mental health - a serious issue to be sure - but in general.

That being said, I know tone gets lost on social media, and we all mistakes, and we all can learn and grow. I hope it’s clear that not only was I not literally calling ryhog schizophrenic, I furthermore didn’t mean to make light of mental illness in any way. I apologize if I did. And tone gets lost over social media, so I’m sorry if I seemed flippant. I also admire KingSpeed for your work helping others with their problems.

I understood you were not being literal and I think you have both fleshed out this subject in a good and thoughtful way that, from my perspective, enriches the discussion.

Thanks, SG. Like I said, I was hesitant but felt compelled to ultimately say something. I have a great sense of humor. (Schitt’s Creek is hilarious). I don’t think it’s fair to say people don’t have one because they want people to be considerate. Saying it’s ok because there were 2 people in the cast who dealt with mental illness is like someone saying he’s not racist because he has lots of black friends. I don’t buy it. Another pet peeve is when people say “the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results.” Um no it’s not.
