True, but the "Pippin" didn't so much transfer from A.R.T. as it had its pre-Broadway, non-profit tryout at A.R.T., which has become standard for Paulus. And we know from "Natasha, Pierre" that some portion of the cost of the A.R.T. run was factored into the total Broadway budget, so it's possible the same was true with "Pippin".
Based on reports from London, it sounds like the "Company" set involves a fair amount of automation, which may be one factor behind the cost... "Pippin" had the circus performers, but my memory is it was otherwise a unit set. |
