Un Triomphe / The Big Hit New French film about prison inmates performing WAITING FOR GODOT

Just caught this marvelous, unexpectedly moving film on the Film Society of LIncoln Center website. Unfortunately, availability for virtual streaming expires tomorrow Monday March 15 at noon. Hopefully, it will end up on a streaming site or get a U.S. release so watch for it. It was shown at Cannes and won the 2020 European Film Award for best Comedy. Although it's not what I would consider a comedy, it's also not the dreary tale that I half-expected given the prison setting. The movie is based on a series of true events that took place in Sweden involving an out-of-work actor who gets the idea of directing a production of GODOT with five incarcerated convicts. The first performance at a theater outside the prison, is so successful that the cast ends up performing the play at various venues over the course of a year. It's a beautifully written tale of the transformative experience of creating theater and the genius of Beckett's masterpiece.
