| I'm also wondering who else was considered right off the bat? In 1978, say, who were the leading baritone actors of the day? Alfred Drake was newly-retired (not sure if this was a planned retirement: his last credit was 1975) but he would seem a good candidate (although I don't know what his gravitas was like; he always played such smooth and charming swains). Richard Kiley would seem perfect for it. Tony Perkins couldn't have sung it but would have been temperamentally right. John Cullum or John McMartin? Hal Linden? Robert Preston? From England maybe Denis Quilley or Joss Ackland? From Australia maybe Keith Michell? All these names would have been worth discussing if I'd been doing the casting in 1978/79. |
