| Among the movies based on plays, Florian Zeller's ''The Father'' (a 2016 Tony nominee) fared best: scoring 6 Oscar nominations. They were for: Best Picture, Actor (Anthony Hopkins), Supporting Actress (Olivia Colman), Adapted Screenplay, Production Design and Editing. Both August Wilson's ''Ma Rainey's'' (a 1985 Tony nominee) and Kemp Powers' ''One Night in Miami'' were expected to be up for Best Picture, too. Both had garnered Best Picture nominations from the Critics' Choice awards and the PGA, and both films are up for the SAG Ensemble award. Still, ''Ma Rainey's'' earned 5 Oscar nominations: Actor (Chadwick Boseman), Actress (Viola Davis), Production Design, Costumes and Makeup. Boseman is a heavy favorite to win Best Actor and join a short list of posthumous Oscar winners that includes Peter Finch and Heath Ledger. And ''One Night'' earned 3 Oscar nods: Adapted Screenplay, and Leslie Odom Jr. is up for Supporting Actor and Song (with Sam Ashworth). Odom is the fourth double Oscar nominee for acting and songwriting, and the first man to do it. (And he's an odds-on-favorite to win Song.) |
