Since the original recording was first issued in 1946, 78 rpm records would have been the only option for the original release, and those albums tended to have less material than LPs because of the multiple records necessary, not to mention the severe limitations for each side of each 78rpm record. That accounts for the fact that cast albums originally released on 78s generally tended to have considerably less material than those first issued during the LP era, just as albums first issued during the LP era tended to be shorter than those first issued during the CD era. I assume that's the main reason why the ST. LOUIS WOMAN album is so short, although I believe some cast albums originally released as 78s were at least a little bit longer.

Michael, I used to go to my Aunt's house in L.A. and spend a weekend, and listen to her cast albums - all on 78s. The albums with 12" rather than 10" 78s played 30 seconds longer on each side. OKLAHOMA was a six 12" lp set, 12 songs each running around 3.5 minutes. Lonely Room, Farmer and the
Cowhand, and Its A Scandal were not recorded - nor was the 'Out of my Dreams ballet."

My parents had those Oklahoma 78s, and that's what started it all for me ! Sitting on the floor on 7th Avenue in South Brooklyn when I was about 7 years old. I've been hooked ever since !

My aunt and uncle were the only ones in our family who had a hi-fi system, which could play LPs. They saw the General Foods TV Variety special in 1954 with Ezio Pinza and Mary Martin singing "Some Enchanted Evening" and bought the South Pacific OBC album. I used to sit on their family room floor when I was 6 years old listening to "Bali Hai" until I memorized it.

Right. And then there was a second volume of the OKLAHOMA! cast album that included the three songs you mentioned but not the ballet, plus I believe a "finale" that was specifically constructed for the recording. "Lonely Room" was sung by Alfred Drake, not Howard Da Silva.

Apparently Da Silva had already left Oklahoma! when Volume 2 was recorded so Alfred Drake stepped in for that song. Ironically Da Silva also missed the recording session for the 1776 cast album because of his heart attack. I've always hoped that some day Sony will re-master 1776 and release the film soundtrack as well, making it a double CD package. I love Da Silva's inimitable characterizations on all his recordings, especially Fiorello!.

An early version of DVD extras so to speak. Of course the 78RPM OBC I seemed to listen to the most was the 6 12" disc recording of SONG OF NORWAY ... go figure!
