I’m surprised that you found it unwatchable. I found poet to be seamlessly edited and very watchable. After Irish rep and some others, I’ve actually gotten to the point of almost no tolerance for standard zoom reading. I see what can be done with backdrops and editing. The bartender in poet poured a drink and the actor picked it up and drank. It looked like they were in the same room. I believe costumes were mailed to the actors so they were not makeshift from the closet. I highly recommended the production last fall when I saw it.

Of course I'd love to see it live, the actors were very good. I have not seen Robert Cuccioli since And The World Goes Round. Yes, I'm dating myself.

I saw their production of The Weir, which in spite of a strong cast was very dull. Maybe it would have been different with a more dynamic production, but I found the whole mechanics of how they tried to achieve "reality" were distracting and did a lot to drain the life out of the play.

When you see strong reading/productions like the Actor's Fund Barbecue (with only a few bells and whistles) and Boston Marriage, or productions like the Wilma's Heroes of the Fourth Turning and any of the closet productions of Theater in Quarentine, it is hard to take the distractingly fake reality of Irish Rep.

I liked the weir more than on stage.

I saw a local production years ago and was bored with the long monologues. I actually enjoyed Irish rep better on my couch. I think the only one that I didn’t was meet me in at Louis. But part of that was the severe editing of the broadway score that has been done over the years—I was surprised at the number of songs dropped, but I can’t blame Irish rep for using the latest version of the show.
