I was listening to both CDs just recently. Good as the Encores cast is--and obviously the completeness makes it necessary--if you're at all a fan of this brilliant score, you owe it to yourself to also have the OBCR. And not just for Pearl Bailey. The wonderful singing and personalities of everyone leap off that recording.

Of course i love Pearlie Mae, who doesn't? But I have to say that Yvette Cason puts a contemporary spin on her songs with just the right amount of insouciant swing.

Yvette Cason is sensational on the Encores album, which is indispensable if you want to hear shimmering orchestrations, restored and greatly improved by Ralph Burns and Luther Henderson.

The originals were by a fleet of orchestrators led by Ted Royal, who was never in the top tier and whose sound has not aged well.

The vocals of Harold Nicholas, Ruby Hill, June Hawkins, Ricard Pope, and, of course, Pearl Bailey are irreplaceable.

100% agree. And I'd never heard "Anyplace I Hang My Hat..." in context and it really needs the chorus which adds to the fabric of that wonderful song. I first heard it sung by Streisand who of course I love and I have an emotional connection to her rendition but I believe I prefer the original.
