The Sound Inside

Audible released The Sound Inside with the Broadway cast and director today. $7.95 on Amazon. We did not see the show on Broadway, but when I read the script, I did not understand the ending and posted that here. ATC’ers who had seen the show, helped me understand what the ending might have been. When I listened to the show today, I still didn’t understand the ending. It didn’t bother me as much as when I read the play, but I still have NO idea what the ending was. Hard to believe that people in the theater were not confused. Did the staging clarify something?

If you need a visual, there will be a streaming version in April.

Well that solved my dilemma.

I don’t like audio recordings much—I tend to not pay attention. So a streaming production gets my money. Thanks for posting.

I don't think I'm a bad person - but it was hard to understand even in the theatre because it was hard to stay awake. SIgh.

Agreed. It was one of those that was so intentionally ambiguous to the point of being silly.

My best interpretation was that she had been imagining the whole thing, or most of it, for her next book. . . . But I'm certainly not terribly confident in that and would be curious to hear others' views.

I think that was the consensus at the time.

The last 4 lines of the script (Kindle edition) are: Or did he stage his own death? Were there footprints? Did this park imagine his body? Would that be a better image?

Very interesting.

I would agree with the consensus although my friend whose opinion I respect loved it.

The unreliable narrator is more of a literary device than a dramatic one for probably a good reason.

Much though I love Mary Louise Parker's work, I thought the "it was all the book she was writing" twist worked better in Adam Rapp's more enjoyable "Edge of Our Bodies."
