| Terrible news. Productions which had been playing in the four performance spaces of Chicago’s Royal George Theatre have been told to relocate. The theatre is slated for “redevelopment.” The Royal George is owned by Margaret Cotter, who also owns the Orpheum and Minetta Lane in New York. Will they be next for “redevelopment”? Let’s hope not. |

| Very sad news indeed. It was a wonderful venue. I have great memories of seeing shows there. (Also a brief backstage visit, delivering a snow-drop mechanism a friend of mine had designed for the "Angels in America" tour.) What a horrible blow to the Chicago theatre community. | |

| Chicago has (had?...hopefully the pandemic hasn't destroyed it all) so many wonderful small itinerant theatre companies, I wonder if it might be possible for several of these companies to join together to save the Royal George as a performance venue and then make a home there for themselves? | |

| Maybe they can raise it a floor and put retail at street level. | |

| I imagine the land is far more valuable with a multi-story building than keeping 4 theaters. Maybe they can get the new construction to contain a theater or two—that would be better than retail. | |
