| Though it's hard to know how much of Jackman's trouble with Valjean had to do with singing the score live on a film shoot for weeks on end. I felt like he got noticeably worse the later in the film we got, and my memory is they shot more or less in order. But I don't think any actor is good enough to pull off "You're Nothing without Me" singing a duet with themselves... nor would that necessarily be appealing to watch. |

It would obviously have to be pre-recorded and lip synched with both parts sung/filmed separately. And don't forget that in the show context, only Stine has the money note at the end (assuming the film took the same path). (I think the OBC recording made some dubious changes to the show's context - including changing the way the show starts musically, and making the end of "You're Nothing Without Me" a sing-off for both of them. On the other hand, they did something wonderfully right in recording the exit music - one of the best, if not THE best, exit music sequences in all of musical theatre.) |

| Well, yes, I know how a movie gets made :-) but the challenge in this idea isn't the logistics, it's the performance. And one of the many reasons this idea wouldn't fly is that it would just be silly. Like, Cats the movie silly. | |

| Exactly. Stine and Stone are two different guys. They shouldn't look like identical twins -- that would just be an unnecessary distraction. What noted fiction writer has ever used his own picture or likeness as the face of his main character, unless the story is a camouflaged autobiography? Has that ever been the intent of City of Angels? I think it would be a mistake to take such a radical approach when committing to film such a well-regarded stage musical. Just IMO. | |

| Stine is supposed to be something of a shlub (or at least more charactery) as opposed to the more polished Stone, so I believe the material would be better served by two different actors, even in a screen version. | |

| But then how come every other character in the "real life" part of the show has a counterpart in the film part played by the same actor? Are you saying that's silly too? Isn't that actually ignoring the entire conceit of the show? In that sense, I think the movie version of the show would be able to do the one thing the stage show couldn't - give Stine his screen counterpart. |

| You have a good point there. No, it's definitely not silly that the other actors play dual roles because that's the way Stine sees them. He takes people in his real life and re-imagines them in their reel life. I just don't think that Stine actually sees himself as being Stone, but he wants to be as cool and confident with women as Stone is. I think City of Angels is a really great musical, IMO Cy Coleman's masterpiece. Everything works perfectly. At least that's the way I see it. Hey, you are ten times more knowledgeable than I am. You actually work in theatre, while I'm just a fan. I have tremendous respect for you and enjoy your posts immensely. I just have a soft spot in my heart for City of Angels, probably because I love film noir and the great scores that are associated with it (like Raksin's Laura, Rozsa's Double Indemnity, Steiner's The Big Sleep, many others). I think Coleman's Broadway score is as atmospheric and effective as their film scores are. I doubt if it will ever be made into a film, but hey, you never know. Maybe Netflix will do it some day. I just disagree with your vision for a film version, that's all. I'm just afraid your idea would screw it up and movies are forever. |

| Thank you for the compliment - I always enjoy and respect your posts as well. We can certainly amicably agree to disagree. In terms of Stine seeing himself as Stone. I only offer in defense one lyric from "You're Nothing Without Me" - both of them sing this to each other, but I do think that Stone makes a point singing this to Stine - "Let's deal with the issue / You wish you were me." :-) May the fun debates continue. :-) |

| Just to note that Anthony Warlow did put a self-duet version of "you're nothing without me" on his album "Centre Stage" - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xw_rAqxNFO4 It's not the best arrangment but it was my introduction to the song and it doesn't sound like a hideous misfire to me. |

| I have nothing against a self-duet in a cabaret setting -- I'm sure that would be fun to hear. However, the casting issue in a film apparently has two equally valid points of view. Both arguments are well laid out in this thread. |
