| was probably FATAL ATTRACTION, a juicy mad lady role in a zeitgeist hit. I think two things hurt her: Cher's crushing Oscar campaign (even the she was only one in an ensemble) and the fact that Close played such a harrowing villain. Anthony Hopkins, Michael Douglas, and Faye Dunaway all won Oscars for playing villains, but each of them brought an edge of humor to their portrayals, making them more palatable to the voters. Close on the other hand was straight out NUTS and very scary. Which may have scared away some potential voters. Still, the performance is iconic. |
