You've nailed it, I think. At the time that must be why ManFAS did so well. But look at it today, almost half a century later. It has the hallmarks of those Stanley kramer pics like "Judgment at Nuremberg" and "On the Beach." Discretely preachy, clearly on the side of the angels, and looking for praise because of it. And boring. You catch on pretty quick to what happens and there are few surprises. And Scofield is possibly the least sexy great actor of all time. I'm not talking looks: joe Pesci is a sexy actor, Scofield has no juice, no balls. You can easily imagine Burton playing Sir Thomas More. But I don't think you want to see Scofield do "Get the Guests." As (I think) Martha howls in the play, "You haven;t got the guts."
