| It's not a binary. Henry Higgins can be abusive AND Bob Fosse and Jerome Robbins can be MORE abusive, but that doesn't mean that Higgins is off the hook for how he treats her. Likewise, his methods can be rooted in effective (if rather old fashioned and barbaric) techniques, and they can STILL be abusive and dehumanizing. And these are all worthwhile questions to explore with intelligence, rather than knee-jerk condemnations of even the thought that we might want to ask how misogyny is reflected in these works. |
