Pulitzer-winning playwright Parks and Tony-winning actor/singer Erivo did a wonderful job with this eight-episode look at the life and career of Aretha Franklin. Parks respectfully illuminated chapters of Aretha's life that she herself never discussed in public, and Erivo recreated her magnificent vocals without ever resorting to imitation. She got to whatever was behind them, highlighting her fully embodied performance. Many others stood out in a strong cast (everyone did, practically), especially Courtney B. Vance as the complicated Rev. C.L. Franklin. Well worth watching.
