''Let's see where we are a year from now.''
Indeed. Due to coronavirus and shutdown movie theaters, many of the studios' high-profile, Oscar-contending movies chose not to open in 2020, postponing their debuts. That left the Oscar playing field to the indies. (''Judas and the Black Messiah'' is the only studio film among the Best Picture nominees.) Is this year a real sign of the Academy's strides toward diversity? Or is it a fluke because the bigger movies sat out the competition?
Finally, I disagree that SAG's ''Best Ensemble is their way of awarding Best Picture.''
In the past decade, only half of the Best Ensemble winners have gone on to win Best Picture. And there are a number of instances where top Oscar contenders weren't even NOMINATED for SAG Ensemble. Like ''La La Land,'' ''The Shape of Water,'' ''Green Book,'' ''Nomadland,'' etc. |
