| No, it isn't. I only know the original stage production from having read about it and, of course, the glorious cast recording. As far as I know, the ending of the film is the same as the stage one. Your previous post threw me off a bit. I saw the film in '64 as a teenager and liked it a lot. Hepburn is radiant in the book scenes, especially after the transformation takes place. However, as an adult I'm a lot more cognizant of the film's flaws, e.g., the dubbing for me doesn't work. It's too obvious when Audrey is singing and when it's Marni Nixon. The first stage production I saw was the pre-Broadway tour in Apr., '93. Melissa Errico at 23 was ideally cast as Eliza, gave a fine performance, and sang beautifully. Richard Chamberlain was also quite good, although at 59 somewhat too old to be a believable romantic partner for the much younger Errico. The show's scenic design for Covent Garden had a very gritty look and the Higgins' domicile a bit spare. Anyway, having at last seen one of my favorite musicals, I was very pleased with everything I experienced on stage. I saw the recent Broadway revival 3 times -- with Ambrose, Benanti, and finally Shereen Ahmed (who was in for Benanti). I thought the production was exquisite. Although I didn't care for the ending, it did make sense since both Ambrose and Benanti were obviously mature women, perfectly capable of finding appropriate employment after being transformed by Higgins. Benanti's singing of the score was, of course, thrilling and made for one of my most cherished memories of a Broadway show. I also enjoyed the performances of Ambrose and Ahmed. Hadden-Paton was superb all 3 times, and both Rigg and Harris were delightful. |
