I'm not sure I'd agree that his films going back to the '30s ARE too slowly paced. Possibly his direction on GWTW was but there are plenty of other reasons given--not publicly then of course--for his firing. At least two involve Clark Gable being unhappy. One because Cukor seemed to be favoring the female stars--and both Vivien Leigh and Olivia de Havilland reportedly returned to Cukor for work on their scenes even after his firing. The other reason Gable was not happy working with Cukor was that Cukor allegedly recognized Gable from days that Gable was a prostitute for gay men.
