What’s wrong with “resorting to imitation”? That’s much more difficult than just singing in your own voice. Audra won a Tony imitating Billie Holliday. I thought one of the weaknesses of Genius: Aretha is that she didn’t at all try to “recreate” Aretha’s vocals. She just sang the songs. No attempt at Aretha. Even Zellweger did better with Judy.
