Well it REALLY depends who you ask. To me, THE WILD PARTY was "by far the best musical theatre piece to be honored" an was actually a musical... with *both* live singing AND an orchestra... even an *original* score (gasp), and an amazing one at that.

CONTACT *is* a dance play. Dance is done *to* music and is commonly associated with a musical... but doesn't make it one. CONTACT is not a musical, but it *is* a dance play. There's more reason to call CONTACT a play than a musical, if you ask me.

The Tony Awards faced a dilemma... could a dance play, specifically CONTACT, win Best Play, specifically over Copenhagen, Dirty Blonde, The Ride Down Mt. Morgan and True West. Now I'd have assumed True West would take it that year but there was a lot of praise and excitement or Copenhagen. But still if True West didn't win already, then I'd say yes... Contact had a clear chance... easily the most talked about show that season. Contact could have taken the nom slot held by The Ride Down Mt. Morgan.

The "musicals" since that have met fewer of the term's theoretical prerequisites and were far less worthy of recognition at east had 2 distinct prerequisites Contact did not... live singing an live music.

A ballet has a story and characters... i wouldn't want a ballet to open on broadway, especially with non-original music and no live singing (and hardly any canned singing) and be up or Best Musical either.

But this is *MY* take on musical vs play.
Were there rules then and are there now to what the Tonys defines as a musical? If it's musical because music is integral to the piece, then how much music? Etc OR will it always be case by case?
