That sort of happened in the 98-99 season when Matthew Bourne's production of SWAN LAKE opened at the Neil Simon Theatre. The production won a Tony for "Unique Theatrical Experience," but Bourne was nominated and won for Best Director of a Musical and scenic designer Lez Brotherston also won for Best Scenic Design of a Musical.
So the production wasn't a musical, but other elements of the production were deemed to qualify their practitioners as working on a musical. That must've taken some rationalization by the nominators. |
