"Swan Lake" was not eligible for Best Musical because it existed as a piece for the stage before

It might could have landed in "Best Revival" but that was not deemed appropriate either for...reasons?

But the elements of design and direction had more to do with the skills necessary for musicals than for plays so I think the choices landed correctly.

Contact was indeed "A Dance Play" but again, the skills necessary to make it successful are from the musical theater world and not the straight theater world. I think given the choices available, Best Musical was the right place to put it, but Best Special Theatrical Event would have made more sense had it been available. It has more in common with what many think of being a musical than Tango Argentino and, other than having a live singer and orchestra, it is akin to Movin' Out--and has more spoken dialogue. But I seen alternative points.

That said, I loved Contact and am grateful it was captured on film.
