O f course it's rude. It is the set up for what follows. Fanny is different from the rest. She looks Jewish, she sounds Jewish. She isn't traditionally pretty. She disregards all the nay sayers and becomes an enormous star on the basis of her talent and chutzpah. She won't let the Strakoshes of the world hold her back. It was exactly the same way with Streisand. Her mother had no belief in her abilities. She struck out at around 17 years old with an intense belief in herself. The character and the actor came together beautifully. So well, in fact, that Funny Girl has not been seen in NYC for more than 50 years.
