Given what's being discussed in this thread, it would benefit people who produce and work on theatre pieces that are not easily categorized as plays or musicals, since it would eliminate the debates about where to nominate someone for their work, and if it's even possible or "fair" to do so. It would eliminate the need for a special catch-all category for these kinds of special events,
It would make winning a Tony even more special since winners will have won against a wider range of competition.
It would make the Tony broadcast less unwieldy with fewer awards and allow them, possibly, to present all the awards on the broadcast and still have room for musical numbers, comedy from the host, and maybe even some kind of representation of productions that don't feature music.
Regarding the whole "Special Event" category that came and went, the Tonys really half-assed that in the sense that, if they were creating a whole new performance category on par with being a play or a musical, they really then also needed to add a whole slate of performance and design awards to go along with it, like Best Featured Actress in a Special Event or Best Scenic Design of a Special Event. Because you can't, logically, call a production a special event and then nominate pieces of it as if it were a musical. Not that the Tonys have ever gone in for logic, of course. |
