| I have always interpreted the ending (starting with "Children Will Listen") as the characters themselves stepping out of the story (as the Narrator did throughout) to wrap it up for us. So all the dead characters come back and we also see (depending on each production's individual staging) rapprochement between characters who, within the context of the story, probably wouldn't have anything to do with each other. All this culminates in the characters coming together for one last tableau that is only marred for a moment at the very end, in a humorous or horrifying way (depending on the line reading and your own point of view), by Cinderella. |
