Question about Drowsy Chaperone ending.
Posted by: BrianRIngram 05:15 pm EDT 03/31/21

I saw the OBC early in the run and I distinctly remember saying to my boyfriend that I wished that Man In Chair had boarded the plane and the plane would take off at the end. But there's a Youtube clip of the OBC showing exactly that. Was this changed during previews? The Youtube clip from the Pittsburgh Playhouse's production shows the plane being dismantled and the MIC very sadly saying goodbye to the cast and walking into a bright light in the refrigerator. What ending is in the licensed material?

After seeing that Playhouse (actually, Point Park University at the Playhouse, a theater which no longer exists, damnit) production, my son in law commented about what a sad ending it was, with Man in Chair committing suicide. That's the only production I saw where it looked like that - had I missed it before?

That’s me on stage in the chair on countless weekends.

"The MAN is flown into the flies. He dips down to retrieve the record before disappearing."

But I have to imagine that many productions, depending on the venue, can't quite pull that off, so they would have to find another image to end on.

I'm still confused because when I saw the OBC the MIC did not sit on the plane and it did not "fly."

Got it. Having not seen the original production, I'm not sure what they did. In 2 local productions that I saw, I don't think he flew off at all, even as in the stage directions.
