LOUIS ST. LOUIS
(May 26, 1942 - March 26, 2021)

Louis St. Louis, the Broadway composer, arranger, and music director best known for his work on "Grease" and "Smokey Joe's Café," passed away peacefully at the Actors' Home in Englewood NJ on March 26, 2021. He was 78.

St. Louis was born in Detroit on May 26, 1942, and worshiped at Detroit's Pentecostal Church, where he became music director at the age of fourteen. Mentored by the father of contemporary gospel music, James Cleveland, he shifted his focus to musical theatre in the late 1960s. St. Louis is best known for his work on the Broadway and film versions of the iconic musical, "Grease." He earned a Grammy nomination for Album of the Year for "Grease (Original Soundtrack)," and he co-wrote (with Scott Simon) the song "Sandy," performed by John Travolta, that reached #2 on the UK singles chart. St Louis also contributed vocals to "Rock 'n' Roll Party Queen" and "Mooning" on the "Grease" album.

In 1995, St. Louis arranged the music for the Leiber & Stoller musical review "Smokey Joe's Café." He conducted and played piano in the original Broadway production, which earned him a Grammy Award, NAACP Theatre Award, LA Drama Critics Award, and an Olivier Award nomination.

In other work, St. Louis produced the "Grease 2" soundtrack, for which he wrote five original songs, and also wrote "Hold Me Close to You," sung by Stephanie Mills for the film "All the Right Moves." He was an original vocal soloist in the premiere production of Leonard Bernstein's "Mass," and is also heard on the cast album of "Blues Suite." A dear friend of Lily Tomlin (who bought him his first piano when he moved to New York), St. Louis was the music director for two of her Emmy Award-winning TV specials: "Lily: Sold Out" and "Lily for President?" His additional Broadway credits include "Over Here," "Truckoad," "Raggedy Ann," and "Roza."
