I agree, it's a lazy and desperate attempt to connect Follies to current shows, and it isn't necessary.
And also i think it's clear ultimately "I'm Still Here" is a book song about Carlotta's life, and not her Follies number. She would have been way too young in the Follies to do that kind of song/lyric, and it is not a Follies kind of number, and just because she starts her monologue with "I had a follies number" (or whatever it was) doesn't mean the song she starts singing IS that number. |
